Somali Pirates Hi-Jack Syrian Ship

Pirates Hijack Bulk Carrier With 25 Crew

Somali pirates are reported to have hijacked another ship, this one a bulk carrier with 25 crew members.

The European Union's anti-piracy force says the MV Khaled Muhieddine K was seized Thursday in the North Arabian Sea.

It says authorities became aware of the hijacking when the ship's master reported being fired on with small arms and seeing pirates on board. It says all contact with the vessel was then lost.

The Khaled Muhieddine K is said to be Syrian-owned and is carrying a crew of 22 Syrians and three Egyptians. It was traveling from Singapore to Yemen when captured.

This is the fourth reported hijacking by Somali pirates within the past week. South Korean commandos freed one of those hijacked ships, the MV Samho Jewelry, in a rescue operation early Friday.

Somali pirates have made hundreds of millions of dollars hijacking ships in recent years. The EU force says the pirates are currently holding more than 30 ships and 700 hostages.
