Bodies of Somali pirates killed in ship raid returned

The bodies of eight Somali pirates killed last month by South Korean navy commandos in a raid to rescue a hijacked vessel were returned to Mogadishu Wednesday, an AFP correspondent witnessed.

The bodies were flown back home from Oman in a small plane and were later handed to relatives for burial.

South Korean commandos on January 21 stormed the hijacked 11,500-tonne freighter Samho Jewelry and rescued all 21 crew members in a dramatic operation that left eight pirates dead.

Five others were seized and will face trial in Seoul.

Somali pirates have continued to attack foreign ships in the Gulf of Aden and the Indian ocean, defying an armada of warships trying to protect the key maritime route.
