The Lewiston Public Library will host Abdikarim Awale telling Somali children's stories from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, in the Callahan Hall on the third floor of the library. The event is free and all ages are welcome.
Abdikarim was a school teacher in Somalia before the Civil War. He came to the United States in 2006 and settled in Lewiston. He remembers being told stories when he was a child, and his favorite was "Omar the Liar." Now the father of six, he often tells Somali stories to his children.
Each story will be introduced in English for the benefit of non-Somali speakers.
The program is made possible by the Friends of the Lewiston Public Library and by a grant from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation to reach out to the new immigrant community and integrate parents and children into the library's preschool programs.
