Somali refugees shelter in embassy as Libyan violence continues

Foreigners in Libya are targeted by revolutionaries who believe them to be mercenaries brought in to prop up Muammar Gaddafi’s regime.

With the situation in Libya worsening as fighting between the government and rebels intensifies, hundreds of Somali refugees have taken refuge at Somalia’s embassy in Tripoli, witnesses said Friday.

The embassy building was filled with Somalis after they were forced by landlords to vacate their homes.

Abdulkadir Ahmed Tusbah told Somali government-run Radio Mogadishu that refugees live in desperate condition, saying that Libyan citizens target them with gunfire or axes.

“We don’t where to run to save our lives from arbitrary murders other than the embassy building.” Tusbah lamented. “No food, no water… We can’t come out to seek and get what to live on.”

He said that more than five Somali refugees had been killed and dozens more hurt.

Tusbah also indicated that about 20 Somalis have reached Tunisia, crossing the border to escape the violence.

“We have no access to leave from this country as world nations have already started evacuating their nationals from troubled Libya,” he said, calling for the Somali transitional government and United Nations to help them evacuate.
