A Kenyan-born Al-Qaeda man was reportedly killed in action last week in Somalia’s restive capital Mogadishu during a security operation conducted by forces of the Transitional Government of Somalia.
According to Somalia’s national broadcaster Radio Mogadishu, the man identified as Musa Hussein was short dead together with Fazul Abdullahi, Al-Qaeda’s East Africa leader who was also gunned down in Mogadishu last week.
The two men were reportedly intercepted at one of Mogadishu’s down town streets while in a Toyota vehicle when they engaged the security personnel in a fighting that killed them.
An investigative story posted on Radio Mogadishu’s website testified that Hussein who was also known as Abdullahi Dheere (the tall one) among Al-Shabaab and Al-Qaeda lieutenants, was born in Kenya’s Northeastern town of Wajir.
“He was born in Wajir town, and he was an important link for Al-Qaeda in the East and Horn of Africa regions playing an important role in its operation” read part of the report which appeared in Somali language.
Hussein reportedly joined the now defunct Union of Islamic Courts (UIC) in 2006 taking part in its major battles in Somalia. He lost one of his legs during a 2006 battle between UIC and a Somali warlord, Abdi Qaybdid.
“After that he fled to Kenya and stayed in Nairobi for sometimes where he was continuing to plan some key operations of Al-Qead and Al-Shabaab” said the report.
The Radio Mogadishu report says youthful Hussein was arrested by the Kenyan Police in a number of times but he was released through bail in all the times and thus was ordered not to move out of Kenya.
“At one point this man escaped arrest in February 2011 at a time when Kenyan police made a number arrest against suspected masterminds of the Kampala blast”
The report further revealed that Hussein who was a close ally of Fazul Abdullahi , was one of the major minds behinds the Kampala bombings.
He was described as an enterprising youthful man blessed with open and great mind, although he was also described as a dangerous killer who took part in a number of bloody Al-Qaeda actions in East and Horn of Africa regions.
Hussein, whose father and mother died when he was a very young boy, was well respected among the ranks and files of Al-Qaeda and Al-shabaab.
He was known for his roles in planning hijackings and suicide bombings that most times led to huge death and destructions of innocent civilians. Hussein was understood to be a renowned footballer during his schools years in Wajir, where he is known to have represented the tiny district in Northern frontier in a number of national football leagues.
