Somali Population In Siouxland Is On The Rise

From rapping rhymes, toe–tapping jives and lots of flashy styles. It was a celebration of growth for the Somali community of Siouxland.

Their population started out with just one family back in 1995 and today, there are over 2,000 Somali people in South Sioux City and Sioux City combined.

And it's not just here, that their numbers are increasing.

Nabiha Mohamud from Hargeysa, Somalia, says, "We're like literally all over the world. Anywhere you go in the world, you will find a Somali person that's kinda doing their own thing. We're business-oriented and even though our country is at war right now, we're just trying to make the best of what's going on here."

Mohamud says their biggest draw to the Siouxland area is the welcoming Midwest feel, the growing opportunity for business and the chance to reconnect with family and friends.
