Imminent release of Algerian sailors detained by Somali pirates

Algiers- the Algerian authorities have apparently reached an agreement to resolve the problem of Algerian sailors hostages in the hands of Somali pirates, according to sources close to the Foreign Ministry.

The sources said the Algerian authorities would have had tough negotiations for some time with the pirates, led by Algerian intermediaries with other Ethiopian intermediaries whose mission was to convey the demands of Somali pirates to Algerian officials.

Ultimately, all the hackers’ demands have been accepted and the date of release of the sailors was set for ten days. The pirates had earlier demanded a ransom but Algeria still refuses to pay ransoms which it regards as a form of financing to terrorist groups. Moreover, Algeria, in this sense, presented before the United Nations a proposal criminalizing the payment of ransoms to terrorist groups. A proposal that many countries have approved while others, such as France, which still pays millions of Euros to terrorists to free its nationals, has made reservations.

Seventeen Algerian sailors and nine Ukrainian are held hostages on board the MV Blida since early January. They spent the month of Ramadan in appalling conditions and were in critical condition.
