Kenya: Jubbaland Conference Held in Nairobi

Fifteen countries and the United Nations Security Council attended a conference on the tense political situation in Jubbaland, organised by the Somali parliament and held in Nairobi Friday (June 14th), UN-funded Radio Bar-Kulan reported.

The conference is a preparatory step for the Somali federal government in advance of the upcoming reconciliation conference planned in Mogadishu, said Hussein Arab Isse, chairman of the parliamentary defence committee.

Isse said the federal government was committed to federalism in accordance with the Somali constitution, but that the Mogadishu reconciliation conference was a final attempt to resolve disagreements over the formation of a Jubbaland federal state.

The meeting in Nairobi also supported the Somali government's fight against al-Shabaab, Isse said.
