United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon pledged UN support in resettling Somali refugees residing in Kenya, Kenya's Daily Nation reported Sunday (June 2nd).
"When I visited Dadaab refugee camp last year, I witnessed a very sad situation where 600,000 people are crowded in one place," Ban said during a meeting with Kenyan Deputy President William Ruto at the UN offices in Yokohama, Japan. "I urge [Kenya] to focus on helping Somalia in the efforts to entrench peace, democracy and governance."
On Friday, Kenyan Secretary of Foreign Affairs Amina Mohamed and Somali Minister of Foreign Affairs Fowsiyo Yusuf Haji Aadan discussed repatriating Somali refugees.
A statement from Kenya's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the ministers agreed to convene an international conference in Nairobi to discuss the safe and orderly return of Somali refugees.
At the nearby Tokyo International Conference on African Development, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said Somalia and Kenya have good relations regarding security and refugees, Kenya's The Standard reported.
"We have trust in the Kenya government in seeking to sort out the problems facing Somalia and it is important for people in the country and across the world to know that some of the targets will not be achieved until mid-next year," Mohamud said Saturday after meeting with Ruto.
Mohamud said his government would work closely with Kenya to resettle about 2 million refugees, as relative peace and calm has taken root in Somalia.
